용소막성당

Yongsomak Catholic Church — Chungbuk Jecheon-si
Completed in 1915, this red-brick Romanesque church was the third built in Gangwon Province, after Pungsuwon and Wonju, and its setting among centuries-old zelkova trees makes it famously picturesque in every season, now designated provincial cultural heritage. Above all it is the hometown of the biblical scholar Fr. Sun Jong-wan, whose memorial room beside the church introduces a man who gave his life to translating the Bible into Korean. Studying the Hebrew and Greek originals, Sun labored over a translation that helped form the scriptural text Korean churches read together. The labor of translation, giving people Scripture in their own tongue, is the shared inheritance of every Christian since the Reformation, so this place quietly renews any Protestant pilgrim's love of the Word. The zelkova shade, the brick church, and one life given to Scripture make it perfect for quiet meditation.
