용문산기도원
나운몽 장로가 경북 김천 용문산에 세운 이곳은 한국 기도원 운동의 발상지로 꼽힌다. 시작은 해방 전후, 청소년들을 신앙과 애국의 정신으로 길러 낸 교육기관 애향숙이었으며, 이것이 점차 전국적인 부흥운동의 진원지로 자라났다. 한국전쟁 전후의 혼란과 극심한 가난, 그리고 수많은 이들이 가족을 잃고 삶의 터전을 잃은 그 시절, 사람들은 이 산에 올라 밤을 새워 금식하며 부르짖어 기도했다. 여기서 일어난 통성기도와 부흥의 불길은 전국 곳곳의 산과 골짜기에 기도원이 세워지는 계기가 되어, 산에 올라 부르짖는 한국 개신교 특유의 산기도 영성을 형성했다. 신학적 논의는 저마다 있을지라도, 민족의 고난기에 교회가 오직 기도로 응답했던 그 절박한 신앙의 자취는 분명하다. 한국교회 영성운동사를 더듬는 순례자에게 빼놓을 수 없는 현장이다. 기도원에 오르며 한때 이 산을 가득 채웠을 부르짖음의 소리를 상상해 보라.
Yongmunsan Prayer Mountain — Gyeongbuk Gimcheon-si
Founded by elder Na Un-mong on Yongmunsan in Gimcheon, this is regarded as the birthplace of Korea's prayer mountain movement. It began around the time of liberation as Aehyangsuk, a youth academy that raised young people in faith and love of country, and grew into a center of nationwide revival. Amid the chaos and crushing poverty around the Korean War, when countless people had lost family and home, multitudes climbed this mountain to fast through the night and cry out in prayer. The fervent prayer and revival fires kindled here inspired prayer retreats across the nation's hills, shaping the mountain-prayer spirituality distinctive to Korean Protestantism. Whatever theological questions one may hold, the mark of a church that answered a nation's suffering with prayer alone is unmistakable — an essential site for tracing Korea's spiritual awakening.
