연동교회

연동교회는 1894년 캐나다 출신 선교사 게일(James S. Gale)의 사역과 함께 서울 종로 연지동에 뿌리내린 초기 장로교회다. 게일은 성경 번역과 최초의 한영사전 편찬으로 한국어와 문화에 정통했던 학자형 선교사로, 그의 목회 아래 교회는 종로 한복판에서 꾸준히 성장했다. 이 교회를 특별하게 만든 것은 신분을 뛰어넘은 복음의 능력이었다. 도살업에 종사하던 백정 출신 신자 박성춘이 장로로 세워지면서, 조선 사회의 완고한 반상(班常)의 벽이 그리스도 안에서 무너지는 사건이 실제로 일어났다. 같은 예배당에서 양반과 천민이 함께 무릎 꿇는 일은 당시로서는 상상하기 어려운 일이었으나, 연동교회는 그것을 신앙의 이름으로 살아냈다. 또한 이 교회는 정신여학교의 모태가 되어 여성 교육의 문을 열었고, 소외되었던 여성들에게 배움과 신앙의 길을 함께 열어 주었다. 130년 가까이 종로에서 복음의 등불을 지켜 온 이곳은, 세상의 계급이 아니라 십자가 앞의 평등을 증언하는 자리다. 예배당 곳곳의 역사 전시물에서 신분을 넘어선 초기 교인들의 이야기를 찾아보라.

Yeondong Church was founded in 1894 through the ministry of Canadian missionary James S. Gale, the noted Bible translator and compiler of the first Korean-English dictionary, whose scholarly grasp of the language shaped its early growth in central Seoul. Its most striking mark is how the gospel dissolved caste: Park Sung-choon, a believer of the despised butcher class, was ordained an elder, so that noble and outcast knelt together in one sanctuary — unthinkable in that era. The church also became the seedbed of Chungshin Girls' School, opening the door of learning and faith to women long shut out. For nearly 130 years it has kept the gospel lamp burning in Jongno, witnessing to an equality found not in social rank but at the foot of the cross. Its historical displays trace the stories of these first believers who crossed the lines of class.
