야월교회 (기독교인순교기념관)
전남 영광 염산면의 야월교회는 6.25 전쟁 때 전 교인 65명이 한 사람도 남김없이 순교한, 한국 교회사에서 가장 아픈 현장 가운데 하나다. 1950년 가을 인민군 점령기와 후퇴기에 어린아이부터 노인까지 온 교회가 신앙 때문에 학살당했고, 갯벌과 바다에 수장되거나 산 채로 묻힌 이들도 있었다. 그러나 교회는 그 터 위에 다시 세워졌고, 순교의 증언을 이어 가기 위해 기독교인순교기념관이 건립되어 65인의 이름과 유품, 기록을 전시하고 있다. 인근 염산교회에서도 77명의 교인이 순교하여, 영광 일대는 한국전쟁기 기독교 수난을 대표하는 순례지가 되었다. 한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺는다는 말씀처럼, 전멸했던 교회가 부활하여 지금도 예배가 드려지고 있다는 사실 자체가 살아 있는 설교다. 기념관의 순교자 명단 앞에 서면 이름 없는 시골 성도들의 믿음이 얼마나 값진 것이었는지 마음에 새겨진다. 염산교회 순교 사적과 함께 묶어 걷는 영광 순교 순례길을 권한다.
Yawol Church Martyrs Memorial — Jeonnam Yeonggwang
At Yawol Church in Yeonggwang, all sixty-five members — children to the elderly — were martyred during the Korean War in the autumn of 1950, some drowned in the tidal flats, others buried alive. Yet the church was rebuilt on the same ground, and the Christian Martyrs Memorial Hall now displays the sixty-five names, belongings, and records. With nearby Yeomsan Church, where seventy-seven believers died, the Yeonggwang area stands as Korea's foremost witness to wartime Christian suffering. That worship continues today where a congregation was once wiped out is itself a living sermon on the grain of wheat that falls and bears much fruit.
