야르데닛은 갈릴리 호수 남단, 요단강이 호수에서 다시 흘러나가는 지점에 조성된 현대식 세례 시설로, 1981년 키부츠 킨네렛이 순례자들을 위해 개장했다. 예수께서 세례 요한에게 세례를 받으신 전통적 장소는 여리고 인근 하류의 카스르 엘 야후드로 전해지지만, 오랫동안 그곳이 국경 지대라 접근이 어려웠던 까닭에 야르데닛이 요단강 세례를 체험하는 대표적 장소로 자리 잡았다. 유칼립투스 나무가 드리운 강가에 안전한 계단과 탈의 시설이 마련되어 있고, 흰 세례복을 입은 순례자들이 강물에 잠기며 신앙을 고백하는 모습은 이곳의 일상적 풍경이다. 개신교 순례팀은 이곳에서 세례식 또는 세례 갱신 예식을 통해 '그리스도와 함께 죽고 함께 살아나는' 복음의 핵심을 몸으로 되새긴다. 예수님도 요단강 물에 잠기심으로 죄인들과 자신을 같은 자리에 두셨고, 물에서 올라오실 때 하늘이 갈라지며 '너는 내 사랑하는 아들이라' 하시는 음성이 임했다(막 1:9-11). 시설을 두르는 '새 생명의 벽'에는 마가복음 1장의 세례 기사가 세계 100여 개 언어의 도자기 타일로 새겨져 있다. 그 가운데 한국어 타일을 찾아 우리말로 그 말씀을 읽어 보는 재미가 있다.
Yardenit Baptismal Site — Emek HaYarden Regional Council
Yardenit is a modern baptismal complex opened in 1981 by Kibbutz Kinneret at the point where the Jordan River flows out of the Sea of Galilee. While tradition places Jesus' own baptism farther downstream at Qasr el-Yahud near Jericho, that site long lay in a closed border zone, and Yardenit became the most-visited place for pilgrims to experience baptism in the Jordan, with safe steps beneath shading eucalyptus trees. White-robed pilgrims confessing their faith in the water are a daily sight, and Protestant groups hold baptisms and baptism renewals here, embodying the gospel truth of dying and rising with Christ (Rom 6). The 'Wall of New Life' surrounding the site carries Mark's account of Jesus' baptism in ceramic tiles in more than a hundred languages — look for the Korean panel and read the words in your own tongue.
