양림동 선교사묘역

호남신학대학교 뒷동산에 자리한 미국 남장로교 선교사와 그 가족 20여 기의 묘역으로, 전남 지역 순회 선교 중 순직한 오웬 선교사 등이 잠들어 있다. 이곳에는 '한국 간호계의 어머니'로 불리는 서서평(엘리자베스 쉐핑) 선교사도 묻혀 있는데, 그는 가난한 여성들과 한센인들을 어머니처럼 품다가 1934년 영양실조 속에 세상을 떠나 광주 최초의 시민사회장으로 배웅받았다. 그가 남긴 '성공이 아니라 섬김(Not success, but service)'이라는 좌우명은 지금도 이 언덕을 찾는 순례자들의 마음에 새겨진다. 묘비들 사이에는 풍토병으로 어려서 세상을 떠난 선교사 자녀들의 작은 무덤도 있어, 온 가족이 치른 선교의 대가를 말없이 보여 준다. 고향 아닌 땅에 묻히기를 자원한 이들의 헌신 위에 광주·전남의 교회들이 세워졌으니, 이 언덕은 '한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺는다'는 말씀의 실물 교과서다. 양림동 순례의 마지막 걸음으로 이곳에 올라 묘비명을 하나하나 읽는 것이 오랜 전통처럼 이어지고 있다. 어린아이들의 작은 묘비 앞에 잠시 멈추어 서서, 그 부모들의 기도를 헤아려 보자.
Yangnim Missionary Cemetery — Jeonnam Nam-gu
On the hill behind Honam Theological University lie some twenty graves of Southern Presbyterian missionaries and their families, including Clement Owen, who died in the course of itinerant evangelism in Jeonnam, and Elisabeth Shepping — 'mother of Korean nursing' — who spent herself for poor women and leprosy patients until her death in 1934, honored with Gwangju's first citywide civic funeral. Her motto, 'Not success, but service,' still meets every pilgrim who climbs this hill. Among the headstones are the small graves of missionary children lost to disease — the price whole families paid for the gospel. The churches of the region were built on the devotion of those who chose to be buried in this land; pause before the children's markers and read the epitaphs one by one.
