양림교회

1904년 성탄절에 유진 벨(배유지) 선교사가 드린 예배에서 시작된 광주 최초의 교회로, 광주·전남 복음화의 출발점이자 '어머니 교회'로 불린다. 목포에서 사역하던 벨 선교사가 광주로 선교부를 옮겨 와, 자신의 임시 사택에서 몇몇 조선인들과 함께 드린 성탄 예배가 광주 기독교 역사의 첫 페이지가 되었다. 이 교회를 중심으로 양림동 언덕에 수피아여학교와 숭일학교, 제중원(광주기독병원의 전신)과 선교사 사택들이 차례로 들어서며 양림동은 광주 근대화의 요람이 되었다. 복음과 함께 교육·의료·복지가 한 언덕에서 자라난 모습은 총체적 선교의 본보기였다. 벨과 함께 사역한 오웬 선교사, 그리고 이 교회가 길러낸 한국인 일꾼들을 통해 복음은 전남의 산골과 섬까지 퍼져 나갔다. 첫 성탄예배에 모인 소수의 사람들로부터 시작된 복음이 한 세기 만에 광주 전역의 수많은 교회로 자라난 역사는, 복음의 생명력을 그대로 증언한다. 오웬기념각, 선교사 묘역, 우일선 사택 등과 함께 양림동 기독교 유적 순례길의 중심을 이룬다. 교회를 기점으로 양림동 언덕의 선교 유적들을 도보로 한 바퀴 돌아보는 반나절 코스를 추천한다.
Yangnim Church — Jeonnam Nam-gu
Gwangju's first church began with a Christmas worship service led by missionary Eugene Bell in 1904, in his temporary residence on Yangnim hill, and is honored as the mother church of the Gwangju-Jeonnam region. Around it rose the Speer and Sungil schools, the Jejungwon clinic that became Gwangju Christian Hospital, and the missionary residences, making Yangnim-dong the cradle of the city's modernization — education, medicine, and welfare growing together with the gospel on one hill. Through Bell, his colleague Clement Owen, and the Korean workers the church raised, the gospel spread to the mountain villages and islands of Jeonnam. From that small Christmas gathering it grew within a century into hundreds of congregations; start here and walk the half-day circuit of Yangnim-dong's mission heritage sites.
