목포 양동교회

목포 양동교회는 1897년 미국 남장로교 유진 벨(배유지, Eugene Bell) 선교사의 목포 선교와 함께 시작된 전남 지역 개신교의 모교회다. 개항 직후의 목포에 들어온 배유지는 이곳을 거점 삼아 호남 서남부 전역에 복음의 씨를 뿌렸고, 그 첫 열매가 바로 양동교회다. 교인들은 예배당을 지으면서 유달산에서 손수 돌을 하나하나 날라 쌓아 올렸다고 전해지는데, 가진 것 없는 이들이 땀과 정성으로 세운 이 석조 예배당은 목포 근대사와 함께 오늘까지 남아 문화재로 지정되어 있다. 신앙은 이렇게 자기 몸을 드려 하나님의 집을 세우는 헌신 속에서 자라 갔다. 나아가 이 교회는 1919년 목포 만세운동 때 교인과 학생들이 앞장서면서 지역 신앙과 민족운동의 구심점 역할을 했으니, 복음이 개인의 영혼뿐 아니라 억눌린 민족의 자존까지 일깨웠음을 보여 준다. 투박한 화강석을 정성껏 쌓아 올린 예배당 벽면을 어루만지며, 그 돌 하나하나에 배인 초기 교인들의 땀과 기도를 느껴 보라.
Yangdong Church, Mokpo — Jeonnam Mokpo-si
Mokpo Yangdong Church, begun in 1897 with the mission of Southern Presbyterian Eugene Bell, is the mother church of Protestantism in South Jeolla. Coming to Mokpo just after the port opened, Bell made it his base for sowing the gospel across the southwest of Honam, and Yangdong Church was its first fruit. Tradition says the members built the sanctuary by carrying the stones themselves, one by one, down from Yudalsan — a stone church raised by people of little means through sweat and devotion, still standing today as designated heritage alongside Mokpo's modern history. Faith grew here through the devotion of offering one's own body to build God's house. Its people also stood at the front of Mokpo's 1919 independence demonstrations, making the church a center of both faith and national movement, and showing that the gospel awakened not only individual souls but the dignity of an oppressed people.
