칠레 최남단 나바리노섬 서쪽 해안, 머레이 해협을 마주한 외딴 만 우라이아는 개신교 선교 역사상 가장 처절한 희생이 있었던 곳이다. 1851년, 남미 선교의 개척자 알렌 가디너 선장은 여섯 명의 동료와 함께 티에라델푸에고 원주민에게 복음을 전하려 이 지역 스패니어드 항구에 상륙했으나, 약속된 보급선이 끝내 오지 않아 여섯 달에 걸쳐 서서히 굶주려 죽어갔다. 그로부터 8년 뒤인 1859년 11월 6일, 남미선교회의 선교선 알렌 가디너호를 타고 온 갈런드 필립스 목사와 선원들이 바로 이 우라이아만에서 야간족과 함께 주일 예배를 드리던 중, 거의 전원이 원주민들의 습격으로 목숨을 잃었다. 배의 요리사 한 사람만이 살아남아 그 비극을 세상에 전했다. 그러나 이야기는 거기서 끝나지 않았다. 이 비극적인 초창기에 선교회 안에서 성장한 소년 토머스 브리지스는 훗날 야간어에 통달해 최초의 야간어-영어 사전을 편찬하고, 우수아이아에 지속적이고 존중에 기반한 선교 공동체를 세웠다. 죽음처럼 보였던 씨앗이 마침내 열매를 맺은 것이다. 이곳은 특수 선박이나 크루즈로만 닿을 수 있는 외딴 만이므로, 직접 찾아가기보다 이 땅에서 복음을 위해 죽기까지 헌신했던 이들을 마음으로 기억하고 묵상할 곳으로 남겨두어도 좋다.
Wulaia Bay — Wulaia Bay, Isla Navarino
On the western shore of Isla Navarino facing the Murray Channel, at the far southern tip of Chile, remote Wulaia Bay holds one of the most sacrificial episodes in Protestant mission history. In 1851, pioneer missionary Captain Allen Gardiner and six companions landed nearby at Spaniards Harbour to bring the gospel to the peoples of Tierra del Fuego, but the promised supply ship never arrived, and over six months they slowly starved to death. Eight years later, on November 6, 1859, Rev. Garland Phillips and the crew of the South American Missionary Society's ship Allen Gardiner were holding Sunday worship with the Yahgan people at this very bay when nearly the entire party was killed in an attack by local men. Only the ship's cook survived to tell the story. Yet this was not the end: a boy who grew up within the mission during these tragic early years, Thomas Bridges, later mastered the Yahgan language, compiled the first Yahgan-English dictionary, and built a lasting, respectful mission community at Ushuaia. What looked like death became a seed that bore fruit. Because this bay can only be reached by specialized boat or cruise, it is a place less to visit than to hold in memory and quiet reflection.
