가나 혼인잔치 교회

가나 혼인잔치 교회는 예수님이 물로 포도주를 만드신 첫 표적(요 2장)의 전승지인 갈릴리 카프르 칸나 마을에 세워진 프란치스코회 교회다. 프란치스코회는 17세기에 이 터를 확보했고, 현재의 쌍탑과 붉은 돔이 인상적인 교회는 19세기 말~20세기 초에 옛 교회 터 위에 세워졌다. 교회 지하 발굴에서는 1세기 마을의 주거 흔적과 초기 그리스도인들이 경배하던 고대 예배 공간의 유적이 확인되었다고 전해지며, 오래된 돌항아리 유물도 함께 전시되어 있다. 요한복음은 유대인의 정결 예식을 따라 두세 통 드는 돌항아리 여섯이 놓여 있었다고 기록하는데, 예수님은 그 항아리에 물을 아귀까지 채우게 하시고 잔치의 부끄러움을 최상의 포도주로 바꾸셨다. 어머니 마리아의 간청과 '무엇이든지 그가 시키는 대로 하라'는 당부, 그리고 말없이 순종한 종들의 손을 통해 일어난 이 표적으로 '예수께서 자기의 영광을 나타내시매 제자들이 그를 믿으니라'는 믿음의 첫 열매가 맺혔다. 가나는 예수님의 제자 나다나엘의 고향이기도 하며(요 21:2), 왕의 신하의 아들을 먼 거리에서 말씀 한마디로 고치신 두 번째 표적도 이 마을에서 이루어졌다(요 4장). 개신교 순례자에게 이곳은 화려한 성소이기 이전에, 일상의 잔치 자리에 임하셔서 결핍을 풍성함으로 바꾸시는 주님을 만나는 자리다. 이곳에서 혼인 서약을 갱신하는 부부 순례자들의 예식이 유명하니, 부부가 함께라면 서약 갱신에 참여해 보는 것도 뜻깊다.
Wedding Church at Cana — Kaffer Kana
The Wedding Church at Kafr Kanna in Galilee stands over the traditional site of Jesus' first miracle, when he turned water into wine at a village wedding (John 2). The Franciscans acquired the site in the seventeenth century, and the present twin-towered church was built over earlier remains in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; excavations beneath it have reportedly revealed first-century dwellings and traces of ancient Christian worship, and old stone jars are displayed inside. John records six stone water jars for Jewish purification rites, which Jesus had filled to the brim before transforming the water — a sign by which he 'revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.' Cana was also the hometown of Nathanael (John 21:2) and the setting of Jesus' second sign, the long-distance healing of a royal official's son (John 4). Married pilgrims often renew their wedding vows here, a moving custom for couples traveling together.
