1521년 4월 보름스 제국의회에서 신앙 철회를 거부한 루터는 파문과 제국 추방령으로 누구든 해쳐도 죄가 되지 않는 처지가 되었다. 귀향길에 선제후 현자 프리드리히가 보낸 기사들이 그를 거짓 납치극으로 빼돌려 아이제나흐 위의 이 산성에 숨겼고, 루터는 '융커 외르크'(귀족 청년 외르크)라는 가명으로 수염을 기른 채 약 10개월을 은신했다. 그는 이 성의 작은 방에서 1521년 12월부터 불과 11주 만에 그리스어 신약성경을 독일어로 옮겼고, 1522년 9월 출간된 이 '9월 성경'은 순식간에 퍼져 독일어 표준화와 종교개혁 확산의 결정적 계기가 되었다. 백성이 자기 언어로 하나님의 말씀을 직접 읽게 하려는 열정이 응축된 곳으로, '오직 성경'의 정신이 실제 번역 작업으로 구현된 산실이다. 바르트부르크는 또한 13세기에 가난한 이들을 섬긴 헝가리의 성녀 엘리사벳이 살았던 성이며, 중세 음유시인들의 노래 경연 전설로도 유명하다. 1999년 유네스코 세계유산으로 등재되었다. 순례의 핵심은 루터가 번역하던 책상과 고래 뼈 발받침이 놓인 소박한 '루터의 방'(루터슈투베)이다. 성에서 내려다보이는 튀링겐 숲의 풍경 속에서, 골방의 고독한 작업이 세계를 바꾼 역사를 실감하게 된다.
Wartburg Castle — Wartburgkreis
After refusing to recant at the Diet of Worms in 1521, the outlawed Luther was spirited away in a staged kidnapping by Elector Frederick the Wise's men and hidden for some ten months in this hilltop castle above Eisenach, disguised as the bearded 'Junker Jörg'. In a plain room here, in just eleven weeks from December 1521, he translated the Greek New Testament into German; the 'September Testament' of 1522 spread rapidly, shaping the German language and carrying the Reformation to the people. The castle was also the home of St. Elizabeth of Hungary in the thirteenth century and is tied to the medieval minstrels' contest legend, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The heart of any visit is the Lutherstube, the simple room with his desk and whale-bone footrest — few places embody sola Scriptura so concretely as this study where the Word was put into the people's own tongue.
