갓등이 왕림성당
갓등이 왕림성당은 1888년 설정된, 오늘날 수원교구에서 가장 오래된 본당으로, 박해 시대부터 신앙을 이어 온 교우촌 '갓등이'에서 출발했다. '갓등이'라는 이름은 갓처럼 생긴 산 아래 등불 같은 신앙 공동체가 있었다는 데서 유래했다고 전해지며, 오래전부터 신자들이 모여 살며 옹기를 굽고 농사를 지으며 신앙을 지켜 온 뿌리 깊은 마을이었다. 본당이 설정된 뒤 이곳에서 수많은 공소와 본당이 갈라져 나가 경기 남부 천주교의 못자리가 되었고, 여러 성직자와 수도자를 배출한 '어머니 교회'로 자리매김했다. 한 산골 교우촌이 넓은 지역 전체 복음화의 모판이 된 이 역사는, 작고 보잘것없는 시작을 통해 큰일을 이루시는 하나님의 방식을 떠올리게 한다. 겨자씨 한 알이 자라 새들이 깃드는 나무가 되듯, 이름 없는 마을 하나가 수많은 교회의 뿌리가 된 셈이다. 개신교 순례자에게도 이곳은 자신을 낳아 준 모교회(母敎會)의 의미와 신앙의 계보를 생각하게 하는 곳이다. 성당 마당에서 본당의 오랜 역사를 새긴 기념물과 옛 사진들을 살펴보며, 한 등불에서 번져 나간 신앙의 불씨를 헤아려 보자.
Wangnim (Gatdeungi) Catholic Church — Gyeonggi Hwaseong-si
Wangnim (Gatdeungi) Church, established in 1888, is the oldest parish in today's Diocese of Suwon, born from a persecution-era Catholic village named 'Gatdeungi.' The name is said to evoke a lamp of faith beneath a hat-shaped hill, and the village was a deep-rooted community where believers long gathered to make pottery, farm, and keep the faith. After the parish was founded, the many mission stations and parishes of southern Gyeonggi sprang from it, and it became a 'mother church' that produced generations of clergy and religious. That a single mountain congregation became the seedbed for a whole region's evangelization recalls how God accomplishes great things from small and humble beginnings — as a mustard seed grows into a tree where birds nest, one obscure village became the root of many churches.
