아빌라 성벽·성 데레사 유적

완벽하게 보존된 중세 성벽이 도시 전체를 감싼, 스페인에서 가장 온전한 성곽 도시입니다. 11~12세기에 쌓인 성벽은 88개의 탑과 아홉 개의 문으로 이어져 걷는 이를 다른 시대로 데려갑니다. 무엇보다 이곳은 아빌라의 성 데레사(1515~82)의 도시입니다. 맨발 카르멜회를 개혁하고 『내면의 성(城)』과 『자서전』을 남긴 그는, 화려한 의식보다 마음 가장 깊은 방에서 하나님을 만나는 관상 기도의 길을 가르쳤습니다. 그의 탄생지에 세워진 산타 데레사 수녀원과, 20년을 지낸 산 엔카르나시온 수도원이 순례자를 맞습니다. 성인 공경의 형태는 개신교 전통과 다르지만, 마음의 성 안쪽 방으로 들어가 하나님과 독대하는 그의 내면 기도의 깊이는 개신교도에게도 값진 배움입니다. 방문 팁: 성벽 위를 걷는 구간은 티켓이 필요하고, 데레사 관련 유적은 도보로 이어지며, 명물 과자 '예마스 데 산타 테레사'도 순례의 소소한 즐거움입니다.
Ávila City Walls & St Teresa's Sites — Castile and León (Ávila)
The most complete walled city in Spain, its entire circuit ringed by perfectly preserved medieval walls. Raised in the 11th-12th centuries with 88 towers and nine gates, the walls carry the walker into another age. Above all, this is the city of St Teresa of Ávila (1515-82). Reformer of the Discalced Carmelites and author of 'The Interior Castle' and her 'Life,' she taught a path of contemplative prayer that meets God in the innermost room of the heart rather than in outward ceremony. The Convent of St Teresa on her birthplace and the Monastery of La Encarnación, where she spent twenty years, receive pilgrims. Though her veneration differs from Protestant practice, the depth of her inner prayer, entering the castle's inner room to meet God, is a rich lesson for Protestants too. Tip: walking the walls needs a ticket, and the sites are reachable on foot.
