빌라도의 법정에서 골고다에 이르기까지 예수님이 십자가를 지고 걸으신 길을 기념하는 '슬픔의 길'로, 예루살렘 구시가의 좁은 골목을 따라 14처의 기념 지점이 이어지며 마지막 다섯 처는 성묘교회 안에 있다. 길은 예수님이 사형 선고를 받으신 안토니아 요새 자리로 전해지는 지점에서 시작해, 십자가를 지신 곳, 구레네 시몬이 억지로 십자가를 대신 진 곳(막 15:21), 예루살렘의 딸들이 울며 따라온 곳(눅 23:28) 등을 차례로 지난다. 초대교회 순례자들의 행렬에서 기원해 중세 프란치스코회의 인도로 다듬어졌고, 14처 체계와 현재 경로는 오랜 순례 전통 속에서 18-19세기에 정착된 것이다. 따라서 정확한 노선의 고증보다, 주님의 수난을 몸으로 따라 걷는 데 이 길의 의미가 있다. 2처 부근에는 로마 시대 아치(에케 호모 아치)와 옛 포장돌이 남아 '보라 이 사람이로다' 하던 빌라도의 법정 분위기를 전해 준다. 각 처마다 수난 기사를 읽으며 걷다 보면 '누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라'(막 8:34) 하신 부르심이 관광의 소음을 뚫고 새롭게 다가온다. 매주 금요일 오후 프란치스코회 수도사들이 인도하는 십자가의 길 행렬에 누구나 동참할 수 있으니, 일정이 맞으면 꼭 함께 걸어 보라. 이른 아침 상점이 열리기 전 시간이 가장 조용하다.
Via Dolorosa — Jerusalem
The Via Dolorosa traces Jesus' path from Pilate's judgment seat to Golgotha through the alleys of the Old City, with fourteen stations, the last five inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Beginning near the traditional site of the Antonia Fortress, it passes the places where Simon of Cyrene was pressed to carry the cross (Mark 15:21) and where the daughters of Jerusalem wept (Luke 23:28). The route grew out of centuries of pilgrim devotion shaped by the Franciscans, its present form settling in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, so its power lies less in topographical precision than in walking the way of the cross with Scripture in hand. Near the second station a Roman arch and ancient paving stones evoke the world of 'Ecce Homo'. Join the Franciscan-led procession on Friday afternoons, or walk it in the quiet of early morning before the shops open.
