발파라이소 감리교회 (올리바르 성전 — 1909년 오순절 부흥의 발상지)

칠레 오순절 운동이 실제로 시작된 자리다. 1895년 조직된 감리교 감독교회 발파라이소 회중은 1903년 알멘드랄 지구 올리바르 거리(현재의 시몬 볼리바르 거리)에 부지를 마련했다. 1906년 대지진으로 성전이 무너지자 천막에서 예배를 이어가다가, 1909년 3월 7일 새 성전을 봉헌했다. 1902년 부임한 미국인 선교사 윌리스 콜린스 후버 목사는 1909년 1월부터 소수의 교인들과 '성령 세례'를 구하는 기도모임을 시작했는데, 이 기도가 회중 전체로 번지면서 방언, 환상, 치유 같은 현상들이 나타났고 그해 9월 12일 무렵 절정에 이르렀다. 산티아고의 감리교 지도부와 갈등이 깊어졌고, 결국 1910년 후버는 목사직에서 물러나야 했다. 뜻을 같이한 약 1천 명의 신자들이 함께 교단을 떠나 후일 '칠레 감리교 오순절교회(호타베체/에반헬리카 대성전 계보)'를 이루었다. 정작 이 건물은 오순절 운동을 떠나보낸 기존 감리교 회중에게 그대로 남았다 — 그래서 지금 이곳 교회는 오순절 교단이 아니다. 건물은 1964년 지진으로 다시 훼손되었고, 1971년 5월 1일 지금의 성전이 새로 봉헌되었다. 화려한 성지가 아니라 평범한 동네 교회 외관이지만, 라틴아메리카 전역으로 퍼진 오순절 운동의 첫 불씨가 당겨진 곳이 바로 여기라는 사실을 알고 나면, 그 평범함이 오히려 마음에 남는다.
Valparaíso Methodist Church ("Templo del Olivar" — birthplace of the 1909 Pentecostal revival) — Valparaíso
This is the actual site where Chile's Pentecostal movement began. The Methodist Episcopal congregation, organized in 1895, acquired property on Calle Olivar (today Simón Bolívar) in the Almendral district in 1903. The 1906 earthquake destroyed the temple, forcing services into a tent until a new temple was dedicated on March 7, 1909. American missionary Willis Collins Hoover, who arrived in 1902, began prayer meetings in January 1909 seeking the "baptism of the Holy Spirit." The movement spread through the congregation, producing tongues, visions, and healings, and peaked around September 12, 1909. Conflict with Methodist leadership in Santiago deepened, and Hoover was forced out in 1910; roughly a thousand members left with him to form what became the Methodist Pentecostal Church of Chile. The building itself, however, remained with the mainline Methodist Episcopal congregation that stayed behind — so the church meeting here today is not Pentecostal. Damaged again by the 1964 earthquake, the current sanctuary was dedicated on May 1, 1971. Its unremarkable, ordinary facade belies the fact that this modest building is where the first spark of a movement that would spread across Latin America and the world was struck.
