발디비아 대성당 (누에스트라 세뇨라 델 로사리오)

발디비아 대성당은 도시가 세워진 이래 이 자리에 들어선 열세 번째 본당 건물로, 정식 명칭은 '누에스트라 세뇨라 델 로사리오'다. 1911년 지어진 직전 성당은 1960년 5월 22일 인류 관측 사상 가장 강력한 규모 9.5의 발디비아 대지진으로 완전히 무너졌고, 그 폐허 위에는 작은 종탑 하나만 세워진 채 오랜 세월 방치되어 있었다. 지진 이후 스물일곱 해가 지난 1987년, 칠레를 처음 방문한 교황 요한 바오로 2세가 새 성당의 초석을 직접 가져와 축복했고, 이를 계기로 1988년부터 십 년에 걸친 공사가 시작되어 1998년 10월 9일 교황 대사와 당시 대통령 에두아르도 프레이가 참석한 가운데 봉헌되었다. 건축가 호르헤 스윈번 부자와 알바로 페드라사가 설계한 라틴 십자형 성당은 높이 50미터의 종탑을 갖추었고, 2층 성전 아래로는 매일 미사를 위한 소성당과 주교들의 유해가 안치된 지하 묘소, 성물을 보존한 교구 박물관이 자리한다. 인류 역사상 가장 큰 지진의 진앙에 자리한 도시가 거의 삼십 년을 기다린 끝에 다시 세운 이 성당은, 재난 이후에도 예배의 자리를 포기하지 않은 공동체의 오랜 인내를 보여 준다. 지하 박물관에 보존된 옛 성당의 유물과 사진들을 통해 무너짐과 기다림, 재건의 세월을 함께 헤아려 보자.
Valdivia Cathedral (Our Lady of the Rosary) — Valdivia
Valdivia Cathedral, formally Our Lady of the Rosary, is the thirteenth main church to stand on this site since the city's founding. Its 1911 predecessor was utterly destroyed by the magnitude-9.5 Valdivia earthquake of May 22, 1960 — still the most powerful ever recorded — leaving only a small bell tower amid the rubble for decades. Twenty-seven years later, in 1987, Pope John Paul II, on his first visit to Chile, personally brought and blessed the cornerstone of a new cathedral; construction ran from 1988 to 1998, and the building was dedicated on October 9, 1998, with the papal nuncio and President Eduardo Frei in attendance. Designed by architects Jorge Swinburn (father and son) and Álvaro Pedraza in a Latin-cross plan with a 50-meter bell tower, the cathedral houses a daily chapel, the bishops' crypt, and a diocesan museum beneath its second-floor sanctuary. That a city at the epicenter of history's largest earthquake waited nearly three decades to rebuild its cathedral speaks to a community's enduring commitment to a place of worship. In the museum's basement, relics and photographs of the old cathedral let visitors trace the years of ruin, waiting, and rebuilding.
