연세대학교 언더우드관

언더우드 선교사가 설립한 연희전문학교의 본관으로, 1924년 건립된 석조 건물이며 사적으로 지정되어 있다. 1885년 스물여섯의 나이로 제물포에 상륙한 언더우드는 새문안교회를 세우고 성경 번역과 한영사전 편찬에 힘썼으며, 생애 말년에는 기독교 종합대학의 설립에 마지막 열정을 쏟았다. 그는 캠퍼스 부지를 확보한 직후 병으로 세상을 떠나 완성된 학교를 보지 못했지만, 그의 형이 기부한 기금과 동료들의 헌신으로 이 본관이 세워져 그의 이름을 갖게 되었다. 중앙의 탑을 중심으로 좌우 날개를 펼친 튜더 고딕풍의 석조 건물은 백양로의 끝에서 캠퍼스 전체를 굽어보며, 한 세기 동안 연세의 상징으로 자리해 왔다. 아들 원한경과 손자, 증손까지 4대가 이 학교와 한국을 섬겼으니 건물에 깃든 것은 한 사람의 이름이 아니라 한 가문의 헌신이다. '진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라'는 요한복음의 말씀을 교훈 삼은 연세의 역사는 복음과 학문이 함께 민족을 깨운 한국 기독교 고등교육의 여정을 보여 준다. 건물 앞 언더우드 동상과 그 앞으로 곧게 뻗은 백양로의 풍경을 함께 눈에 담고, 아펜젤러관·스팀슨관까지 초기 3대 석조 건물을 이어서 둘러보자.
Underwood Hall, Yonsei University — Seoul Seodaemun-gu
Underwood Hall, completed in 1924, is the main building of the college founded by Horace Underwood and a designated historic site. Landing at Jemulpo in 1885 at age twenty-six, Underwood founded Saemoonan Church, translated Scripture, compiled dictionaries, and poured his final years into establishing a Christian university; he died soon after securing the campus land, and the hall bearing his name was built with his brother's gift and his colleagues' labor. The Tudor-Gothic building with its central tower has overlooked the campus from the head of Baekyang-ro for a century, embodying not one man's name but four generations of one family's service. The university's motto — 'the truth will set you free' (John 8:32) — sums up a journey in which gospel and learning awakened a nation; the Underwood statue before the hall is the campus's defining view.
