언더우드가기념관

1927년 언더우드 2세(원한경) 부부가 연희전문학교 교정에 지어 살던 사택을 기념관으로 꾸민 곳으로, 4대에 걸쳐 한국을 섬긴 언더우드 가문의 유품과 자료를 전시한다. 1885년 부활절에 아펜젤러와 함께 제물포에 첫발을 디딘 언더우드 1세(원두우)는 새문안교회를 세우고 성경 번역과 사전 편찬, 연희전문 설립까지 감당한 한국 개신교 선교의 개척자였다. 그의 아들 원한경은 한국에서 나고 자라 아버지의 뒤를 이어 연희전문의 교장이 되었고, 한국의 역사와 문화를 연구하는 학자로도 이름을 남겼다. 손자 원일한 역시 한국전쟁 때 해군 장교로 참전하고 평생을 연세와 함께했으니, 이 가문의 이야기는 선교가 한 세대의 사업이 아니라 대를 이은 헌신임을 보여 준다. 붉은 벽돌의 사택은 캠퍼스 숲속에 고즈넉이 자리해 있으며, 내부에는 가족의 사진과 유품, 옛 가구와 벽난로가 보존되어 선교사 가족의 일상을 가까이 들여다볼 수 있다. 교육과 성경 번역, 사전 편찬 등 이들이 남긴 열매는 오늘 한국 교회와 사회 곳곳에 스며 있다. 언더우드관과 백양로의 동상, 양화진의 가족 묘역과 이어 보면 한 가문의 헌신이 그리는 궤적이 온전히 보인다.
Underwood Family Memorial Hall — Seoul Seodaemun-gu
This memorial hall occupies the 1927 campus residence of Horace Horton Underwood, displaying belongings and records of the Underwood family, who served Korea across four generations. The first Horace Underwood, who landed at Jemulpo on Easter 1885, founded Saemoonan Church, labored in Bible translation and dictionary-making, and established the college that became Yonsei University. His son, born and raised in Korea, succeeded him as the college's president and became a scholar of Korean culture, while his grandson served in the Korean War and gave his life to the university as well. The preserved fireplace, furniture, and family photographs offer an intimate glimpse of a missionary family's daily life; seen together with Underwood Hall, the campus statue, and the family graves at Yanghwajin, the house completes the arc of one family's devotion.
