나사로의 무덤 & 성 나사로 교회 (베다니, 알에이자리야)

오늘날 알에이자리야로 불리는 이 마을의 이름 자체가 나사로에서 유래했으며, 성경의 베다니로 마리아와 마르다와 나사로가 살던 마을이다. 예수께서 죽은 지 나흘이 지나 이미 무덤에 있던 나사로를 다시 살리신 곳으로, 요한복음의 절정을 이루는 표적이다. 이때 예수께서 나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠다고 선언하셨다(요 11:1-44). 4세기부터 이곳이 공경되어 왔고, 현재의 가톨릭 교회는 건축가 바를루치의 설계로 1952~1953년에 세워졌으며 프란치스코회가 관리한다. 인근에는 정교회 교회도 있다. 무덤은 좁은 계단을 따라 지하 암굴로 내려가는 구조다. 오늘날 무덤 입구는 이슬람 시대에 세워진 모스크 곁에 있어 접근 동선과 개방 시간을 현지에서 확인해야 하며, 좁고 미끄러운 계단을 내려가야 하므로 거동이 불편한 순례자는 주의가 필요하다. 베다니는 고난주간에 예수께서 머무신 숙소였고 승천지(눅 24:50) 부근이기도 하다. 개신교에서 부활과 영생의 복음을 가르치는 핵심 현장으로, 실제 마을과 무덤 전승이 신약과 긴밀히 연결된다.
Tomb of Lazarus & Church of St. Lazarus — Bethany (al-Eizariya)
The name of the town now called al-Eizariya derives from Lazarus itself; this is biblical Bethany, the village of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Here Jesus raised Lazarus, four days dead and already in the tomb, the climactic sign of John's Gospel, where He declared, 'I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live' (John 11:1-44). Venerated since the 4th century, the present Catholic church was designed by the architect Barluzzi and built in 1952-1953, cared for by the Franciscans; an Orthodox church stands nearby. The tomb is reached by narrow steps down into an underground rock chamber. Bethany was Jesus' lodging during Holy Week and lies near the site of the Ascension (Luke 24:50). It is a central place for Protestant teaching on resurrection and eternal life, where the real village and tomb tradition connect closely with the New Testament.
