가든 툼(무덤 정원)

다마스쿠스 문 밖, 해골 모양의 바위 언덕 곁에 자리한 바위 무덤과 정원으로, 1883년 영국의 찰스 고든 장군이 이 언덕의 형상과 위치를 근거로 골고다와 예수님 무덤의 후보지로 제안한 이후 개신교 순례자들이 사랑하는 부활 묵상의 장소가 되었다. 요한복음은 예수님이 십자가에 못 박히신 곳에 동산이 있고 그 동산 안에 새 무덤이 있었다고 증언하는데(요 19:41), 이곳에는 실제로 바위를 깎아 만든 1세기 양식 논의가 이어지는 고대 무덤과 함께 대형 물 저장고, 포도주 틀 유구가 발견되어 옛날 이곳이 가꾸어진 동산이었음을 보여 준다. 1894년 설립된 영국의 가든 툼 협회가 130년 넘게 이 정원을 순례자를 위한 기도와 예배의 공간으로 가꾸어 왔다. 성묘교회의 혼잡과 달리 나무 그늘 아래 조용한 좌석들이 마련되어 있어, 순례팀별로 말씀을 나누고 찬송하며 성찬을 나눌 수 있는 것이 가장 큰 은혜다. 안내자들 스스로 강조하듯 이곳이 실제 지점인지는 확정할 수 없으며, 정확한 위치보다 중요한 것은 '그가 여기 계시지 않고 그가 말씀하시던 대로 살아나셨다'(마 28:6)는 빈 무덤의 복음 그 자체다. 무덤 문에 걸린 'He is not here — for He is risen'(그는 여기 계시지 않다, 살아나셨다) 명패가 이 정원 전체의 메시지를 요약한다. 예루살렘 일정의 마지막에 이곳에서 부활 예배로 순례를 맺는 팀이 많다.
The Garden Tomb — Jerusalem
Beside a skull-shaped rocky escarpment outside the Damascus Gate lies this rock-cut tomb in a quiet garden, proposed in 1883 by General Charles Gordon as the site of Golgotha and cared for by the British Garden Tomb Association since 1894. John's Gospel records that a garden with a new tomb lay where Jesus was crucified (John 19:41), and an ancient cistern and winepress found here show the site was indeed once a cultivated garden. Beloved by Protestant pilgrims, it offers what the crowded Holy Sepulchre cannot: stillness under the trees for groups to read Scripture, sing, and share communion. As the guides themselves stress, the exact spot cannot be proven and matters less than the empty tomb's message, summed up on the door: 'He is not here — for He is risen' (Matthew 28:6).
