폰페라다 템플기사단 성채·라 엔시나 대성전

Templar Castle & Basilica of La Encina — El Bierzo
The Templar Castle of Ponferrada rises on a former Roman fortress; in 1178 the crown of León granted it to the Knights Templar to defend the pilgrim route (12th-13th c.). Above the Sil river, its battlemented walls and towers preserve the grandeur of a medieval fortress. The nearby Basilica of La Encina (from 1573) honours the 'Virgin of the Oak,' whose name comes from the tradition that the statue was found within an oak tree (legend). Ponferrada is the symbolic gateway where pilgrims cross the harsh mountains into the fertile Bierzo basin, a land of old mines and vineyards. For Protestant pilgrims the Templar castle recalls the tangled history of faith and force in the crusading age, and that true defence and rest lie not in walls but in God.
