타이베 (성경의 에브라임)

나사로를 살리신 뒤 유대 당국이 예수를 죽이려 모의하자, 예수께서 제자들과 함께 물러가 머무신 에브라임이라는 동네로 지목되는 곳이다(요 11:54). 광야 가까운 조용한 마을이지만 실제 신약의 피신지로서 의미가 크다. 구약에서는 베냐민 지파의 성읍 오브라(수 18:23)로 여겨지며, 6세기 마다바 지도에도 등장한다. 4~5세기 비잔틴 시대의 성당이 세워졌고 십자군 때 재건되었다. 살라딘이 이 마을을 타이베로 개명했다고 전해지며, 오늘날 서안 지구에서 거의 유일한 전원형 기독교 마을로 정교회와 멜키트, 라틴 교회가 공존한다. 폐허가 된 성 게오르기우스(현지어로 엘카데르) 성당 유적이 남아 있다. 마을에서는 전통 방식의 올리브유와 이 지역에서 손꼽히는 팔레스타인 수제 맥주가 생산되어, 순례객이 방문만으로도 어려운 지역 경제를 직접 도울 수 있다. 정직하게 말하면 신약의 에브라임 비정은 유력한 전승이며 구약 지명과의 연결도 학문적으로 논의된다. 살아 있는 팔레스타인 기독교 공동체를 만나 신앙의 현재를 확인하기에 뜻깊은 곳이다.
Taybeh (biblical Ephraim) — Ramallah
The place identified with Ephraim, the town where Jesus withdrew and stayed with His disciples after raising Lazarus, when the Judean authorities plotted to kill Him (John 11:54). A quiet village near the wilderness, it carries real weight as a New Testament place of retreat. In the Old Testament it is taken as Ophrah of the tribe of Benjamin (Josh 18:23) and appears on the 6th-century Madaba map. A Byzantine church was built here in the 4th-5th centuries and rebuilt by the Crusaders. Saladin is said to have renamed the village Taybeh, and today it is nearly the only rural Christian village in the West Bank, home together to Orthodox, Melkite, and Latin churches, with the ruined Church of St. George (locally El-Khader) still standing. Honestly, the identification with New Testament Ephraim is a strong tradition, and its link to the Old Testament name is discussed among scholars. It is a meaningful place to meet a living Palestinian Christian community and see faith in the present.
