다소(바울의 고향)

터키 남부 킬리키아 평원의 다소(오늘의 타르수스)는 사도 바울이 태어나 자란 고향이다. 그는 훗날 자신을 '길리기아 다소 시민이니 소읍이 아닌 유명한 성의 시민'이라 밝혔는데(행 21:39), 이 자부심에는 근거가 있었다. 다소는 스토아 철학의 명문 학당으로 이름난 헬라 문화의 중심지였고, 지중해와 내륙을 잇는 교역으로 번성한 국제도시였으며, 이곳의 유대인 가정은 로마 시민권을 지니고 있었다. 바울은 히브리 전통 안에서 자라 가말리엘 문하에서 율법을 배웠고, 헬라의 언어와 사상을 익혔으며, 태어나면서 로마 시민이었다. 이 세 세계가 한 사람 안에 모인 다소야말로, 유대인과 헬라인과 로마 세계를 두루 아우를 '이방인의 사도'를 길러낸 하나님의 준비된 토양이었다. 다메섹 도상에서 부활하신 주님을 만나 박해자 사울에서 사도 바울로 변화된 그는, 회심 후 한동안 이 고향에 머물다 바나바의 부름을 받아 안디옥 사역으로 나아갔다. 시내에는 오늘도 물이 고여 있는 '바울의 우물'로 전해지는 옛 우물과 성 바울 기념교회가 보존되어 있고, 발굴된 로마 시대의 포장도로와 '클레오파트라의 문'이라 불리는 성문도 남아 있다. 하나님이 한 사람의 출신과 교육, 신분 전부를 복음의 도구로 쓰신다는 사실을, 이 출발점에서 조용히 묵상하게 된다. 지금도 물이 솟는 바울의 우물과 발굴된 로마 도로를 눈여겨보라.
Tarsus, Hometown of Paul — Tarsus
Tarsus in the Cilician plain of southern Turkey is the hometown where the Apostle Paul was born and raised. He would later describe himself as 'a citizen of no ordinary city' (Acts 21:39), and the pride was well founded: Tarsus was a center of Greek culture famed for its Stoic school, a prosperous international trading city linking sea and interior, and home to Jewish families who held Roman citizenship. Paul grew up in the Hebrew tradition, studied the law under Gamaliel, learned the Greek language and thought, and was a Roman citizen from birth — three worlds meeting in one man, the very soil God prepared to raise an apostle to the Gentiles who could reach Jew, Greek, and Roman alike. After meeting the risen Lord on the Damascus road and turning from Saul the persecutor to Paul the apostle, he stayed a while in this hometown before Barnabas called him to the work at Antioch. The town still preserves the old well known as St. Paul's Well, a memorial church bearing his name, an excavated Roman road, and the gate called Cleopatra's Gate.
