청주 탑동양관

청주 탑동양관은 1900년대 초반 미국 북장로회 선교사들이 청주 탑동 언덕에 지은 여섯 채의 서양식 주택군으로, 충북도 유형문화재로 지정되어 있다. 밀러(민로아) 선교사를 비롯한 초기 선교사들이 이 언덕에 선교부를 꾸리면서 청주는 충북 선교와 근대 교육, 의료의 중심지로 자라났고, 양관은 그 사역의 본거지이자 선교사 가족들의 생활 공간이 되었다. 붉은 벽돌과 한식 기와, 함석 등 서양의 건축 기술과 한국에서 구할 수 있는 재료가 뒤섞여 지어진 이 건물들은, 초기 선교부 건축이 어떤 모습이었는지를 보여주는 귀한 실물 자료다. 이 언덕에서 학교와 병원과 교회가 뻗어 나가 지역을 변화시킨 역사는, 복음이 한 도시에 들어와 사람의 영혼뿐 아니라 배움과 몸까지 함께 돌보며 맺은 총체적 열매를 증언한다. 낯선 땅에 가족과 함께 정착해 평생을 이웃을 위해 살았던 선교사들의 헌신이, 이 소박한 집들의 벽돌 한 장 한 장에 배어 있다. 지금은 학교 교정 등 여러 곳에 흩어져 있어 하나씩 찾아보는 순례가 흥미롭다. 일신여자중고등학교 교정을 비롯해 언덕 곳곳에 남은 여섯 채 건물을 하나하나 찾아보며 초기 선교사들의 삶의 자리를 더듬어 보자.
Tapdong Foreign Missionary Houses — Chungbuk Sangdang-gu
The Tapdong 'Western houses' are six early-1900s residences built by American Northern Presbyterian missionaries on a Cheongju hilltop, now provincial cultural heritage. As missionaries such as Frederick Miller established a mission station here, Cheongju grew into the hub of Protestant mission, modern education, and medical care in North Chungcheong, with these houses serving as the base of that work and the homes of missionary families. Blending imported brick and metal roofing with Korean tile and local materials, they are rare physical documents of what an early mission station looked like. From this hill flowed the schools, hospital work, and churches that reshaped the region — the gospel entering a city to care for souls, minds, and bodies alike. The devotion of families who settled in a strange land to spend their lives for their neighbors is soaked into every brick. Scattered around the school campus today, locating all six makes an enjoyable mini-pilgrimage.
