수리산성지

수리산성지는 박해를 피한 신자들이 산속으로 숨어들어 담배 농사를 지으며 살아 '담배촌'이라 불린 교우촌 자리에 조성된 성지로, 1839년 기해박해 때 순교한 성 최경환 프란치스코의 묘가 있다. 최경환은 충청도의 넉넉한 집안 출신으로 신앙 때문에 여러 차례 거처를 옮기다 수리산 담배촌에 정착했으며, 이곳에서 신자들을 돌보는 회장으로 교우촌을 이끌었다. 그는 한국의 두 번째 사제가 될 아들 최양업을 신학 공부를 위해 마카오로 떠나보낸 아버지이기도 하다. 아들을 이역만리로 보낸 뒤 교우촌의 지도자로 신앙을 지키다 1839년 체포되어 모진 고문 끝에 서울의 옥중에서 순교했다. 아버지는 순교로, 아들은 사제로 한 가정이 통째로 복음에 드려진 이 이야기는 신앙의 대물림이 무엇인지를 깊이 생각하게 하며, 자녀 신앙교육을 소중히 여기는 개신교 가정에도 큰 울림을 준다. 최양업 신부는 훗날 조선 전역을 걸어 다니며 순교 대신 '땀의 순교'로 평생을 바쳤다. 수리산 자락의 호젓한 산길을 따라 묘역과 성당이 이어지니, 최경환 성인 묘까지 오르는 숲길을 걸으며 대를 이은 믿음의 유산을 묵상해 보자.
Surisan Holy Site — Gyeonggi Manan-gu
This hidden valley village, nicknamed 'Tobacco Village' for the crop its persecuted Catholic settlers grew, holds the grave of St. Choe Gyeong-hwan, martyred in the 1839 persecution. Born to a comfortable family, Choe moved repeatedly for the sake of his faith before settling on Surisan, where he led the community as its lay leader. He was also the father of Choe Yang-eop, who would become Korea's second native priest — sent all the way to Macau for seminary training. Arrested in 1839, Choe died under torture in a Seoul prison. A family wholly given to the gospel, the father through martyrdom and the son through ministry, their story speaks powerfully to any family that treasures passing on the faith; Fr. Choe Yang-eop later spent his life walking all Korea in a 'martyrdom of sweat.' A quiet forest path leads up to the saint's grave.
