숲정이성지

숲정이성지는 신유박해(1801)부터 병인박해(1866)에 이르기까지 전주 지역 천주교 신자들이 처형된 대표적 순교 터다. 전주성 북쪽의 이 형장에서 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 여러 신자들이 신앙을 지키다 참수되었으며, 그 가운데 가장 널리 기억되는 이는 동정부부로 유명한 이순이 루갈다다. 이순이는 남편 유중철과 함께 신앙을 위해 부부의 연을 절제하며 살기로 서원한 젊은 신자로, 옥에 갇힌 채 죽음을 기다리며 어머니에게 편지를 써 보냈다. 죽음을 눈앞에 두고도 두려움보다 하늘의 소망으로 가득 찬 그 옥중 편지는, 오늘까지 한국 순교 신앙의 절창으로 전해진다. 아직 스무 살 남짓한 젊은이들이 세상의 그 어떤 것과도 바꿀 수 없는 믿음을 붙들고 죽음을 향해 걸어간 이야기는, 세상이 감당하지 못하는 믿음이 어떤 것인지를 조용히 되묻게 한다. 개신교 순례자에게도 이곳은 신앙을 위해 목숨을 아끼지 않은 선진들의 결단을 되새기는 자리다. 전주 시내 순교 성지 순례길에서 전동성당, 치명자산과 함께 둘러보면 좋다.
Supjeongi Martyrs' Site — Jeonbuk Deokjin-gu
Supjeongi was a principal execution ground for Catholics of the Jeonju region from the persecution of 1801 through 1866. On this killing field north of the old city walls, many believers were beheaded over the years for keeping their faith, and the most widely remembered among them is Yi Sun-i (Lutgarda), famed for her virginal marriage. Yi Sun-i was a young believer who, with her husband Yu Jung-cheol, had vowed to live in restraint for the sake of their faith; awaiting death in prison, she wrote letters to her mother. Those prison letters, filled not with fear but with heavenly hope on the very edge of death, remain to this day classics of Korean martyr spirituality. That young people barely past twenty walked toward death holding a faith they would trade for nothing quietly presses us to ask what kind of faith the world cannot withstand. For Protestant pilgrims too, this is a place to remember forebears who did not spare their lives for faith. On the Jeonju pilgrimage route, visit it together with Jeondong Cathedral and Chimyeongjasan.
