연세대학교 스팀슨관

1920년 완공된 연희전문학교 최초의 석조 건물로, 미국 로스앤젤레스의 자선가 찰스 스팀슨의 기부로 세워졌으며 사적으로 지정되어 있다. 언더우드 선교사는 서울 근교의 너른 숲과 언덕을 사들여 기독교 종합대학의 캠퍼스를 꿈꾸었으나 부지 매입 직후 병을 얻어 세상을 떠났고, 그 꿈은 동료들과 아들 원한경, 그리고 바다 건너 후원자들의 손으로 이어졌다. 스팀슨관은 그 꿈이 처음으로 돌의 형태를 얻은 건물로, 화강석을 다듬어 쌓은 튜더 고딕풍의 외관은 이후 세워질 언더우드관·아펜젤러관과 함께 연세 캠퍼스 건축의 규범이 되었다. 준공 당시 대학 본부와 강의실로 쓰였으며, 한 세기가 지난 지금도 대학의 행정 공간으로 살아 있는 건물이다. 지식과 신앙을 함께 세우려 했던 초기 선교 교육의 정신이 이 견고한 석조 벽에 배어 있다. 기부자의 이름을 딴 건물이라는 사실은, 이 캠퍼스가 선교사들의 헌신만이 아니라 얼굴도 모르는 땅을 위해 지갑을 연 수많은 후원자들의 믿음 위에 세워졌음을 일깨운다. 언더우드관·아펜젤러관과 함께 이루는 초기 연희 캠퍼스의 삼각 구도를 백양로 쪽에서 한눈에 담아 보자.
Stimson Hall, Yonsei University — Seoul Seodaemun-gu
Completed in 1920 with a gift from Los Angeles philanthropist Charles Stimson, Stimson Hall is the first stone building of Chosen Christian College (now Yonsei University) and a designated historic site. Horace Underwood had purchased the wooded hills for his dream of a Christian university but died soon after, and the dream was carried forward by his colleagues, his son, and supporters across the ocean. The hall's dressed-granite, Tudor-Gothic design set the architectural pattern for Underwood and Appenzeller Halls that followed, and the building still serves the university a century later. Named for a donor who never saw the land he blessed, it reminds visitors that the campus rests on the faith of unseen givers as well as missionaries; view the original trio of stone halls together from Baekyang-ro.
