스텔라 마리스 수도원 (갈멜산)

갈멜산이 지중해로 뻗어 내린 곶 정상에 선 스텔라 마리스('바다의 별')는 맨발 가르멜회의 국제 총본원입니다. 가르멜회는 12세기 십자군 시대에 이 산에서 엘리야 예언자를 본받아 관상 생활을 하던 은수자들에게서 비롯되었고, 오늘의 성당은 1836년에 세워졌습니다. 제단 아래에는 엘리야가 머물렀다는 전승의 작은 동굴이 있습니다. 갈멜산은 무엇보다 엘리야가 바알과 아세라 선지자 850명과 맞선 대결의 무대입니다. '여호와 그는 하나님이시로다'라는 백성의 고백이 터져 나온 이곳은(왕상 18장), 오직 한 분 하나님만 예배하라는 개신교 신앙의 준엄한 교훈을 새기게 합니다. 다만 불로 응답하신 실제 대결 정상은 남동쪽 무흐라카로 전승되며 별도 순례지입니다. 방문 팁: 옥상 전망대에서 하이파 만과 갈멜 능선을 조망하며, 우상과 타협하지 않는 예배를 묵상하십시오.
Stella Maris Monastery — Haifa
Standing on the summit of the cape where Mount Carmel reaches the Mediterranean, Stella Maris ('Star of the Sea') is the international headquarters of the Discalced Carmelite Order. The order grew from 12th-century hermits who lived on this mountain in imitation of the prophet Elijah; the present church dates to 1836, with a small traditional Elijah cave beneath the altar. Carmel is above all the stage of Elijah's contest with the 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah, where the people cried, 'The LORD, he is God' (1 Kings 18) - a stern reminder to worship the one God alone. Note that the actual summit of the fire-answered contest is traditionally located at Muhraqa to the southeast, a separate site. Tip: from the rooftop lookout survey Haifa Bay and the Carmel ridge, and meditate on worship that refuses compromise with idols.
