비텐베르크 시교회(성 마리아 교회)

비텐베르크 구시가의 중심에 선 성 마리아 시교회는 마르틴 루터가 30여 년에 걸쳐 2천 회가 넘는 설교를 전한 그의 본당으로, '종교개혁의 어머니 교회'라 불린다. 성교회가 상징적 사건의 무대라면, 이 시교회는 종교개혁 예배가 실제로 태어나 자란 자리다. 이곳에서 라틴어 미사 대신 최초의 독일어 예배가 드려졌고, 사제만 잔을 받던 관행을 넘어 회중이 빵과 잔을 함께 받는 이종배찬(二種陪餐)이 시행되었다. 루터는 이 교회에서 카타리나 폰 보라와 결혼식을 올리고 자녀들에게 세례를 주었으며, 라틴어를 모르는 평민도 자기 언어로 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 주의 만찬에 온전히 참여하게 되었다. 개신교 예배의 원형이 여기서 빚어진 것이다. 강단 앞을 장식한 종교개혁 제단화는 루카스 크라나흐 부자(父子)가 그린 걸작으로, 세례와 성찬, 고백, 그리고 성경을 펴 든 채 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도만을 회중에게 가리키며 설교하는 루터의 모습이 담겨 있다. 말씀 선포와 성례를 교회의 두 중심으로 삼은 개혁의 비전이 한 폭의 그림에 응축되어 있다. 유네스코 세계유산인 이 교회에서, 크라나흐 제단화의 설교 장면을 오래 들여다보길 권한다.
Stadtkirche St. Mary's, Wittenberg — Wittenberg
At the heart of Wittenberg's old town, St. Mary's town church is where Martin Luther preached over two thousand sermons across some thirty years — his home pulpit, called the 'mother church of the Reformation.' If the Castle Church was the stage of a symbolic act, here Protestant worship was actually born and raised. The first German-language services were held here in place of the Latin Mass, and the congregation first received communion in both kinds rather than the cup being reserved to priests. Luther married Katharina von Bora and baptized his children in this church, and common people who knew no Latin could now hear God's word in their own tongue and share fully in the Lord's Supper — the very pattern of Protestant worship took shape here. The Reformation altarpiece before the chancel, a masterpiece by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Younger, depicts baptism, communion, and confession, and Luther preaching while pointing the congregation to Christ crucified alone.
