St. Peter's Church, Jaffa (& House of Simon the Tanner) — Jaffa
On the Mediterranean coast, Joppa (Jaffa) is the harbor where Jonah boarded a ship to Tarshish to flee God's call (Jonah 1:3), and where cedar for Solomon's temple was landed. In Acts, Peter raised the disciple Tabitha (Dorcas) here (Acts 9:36-42), and while staying with Simon the Tanner by the sea he received the vision, 'What God has cleansed, do not call common.' It led straight to the Gentile centurion Cornelius, the decisive turning point at which the gospel opened beyond Israel to the nations (Acts 10). Today's St. Peter's Church, built by the Franciscans in 1888-1894 over a Crusader citadel, overlooks the old port with its red bell tower; a modest traditional House of Simon the Tanner stands nearby. Tip: walk the old harbor and lighthouse hill, and reflect on God's call to move past our prejudices.
