세인트폴 대성당

세인트폴 대성당은 1666년 런던 대화재로 옛 성당이 소실된 뒤 건축가 크리스토퍼 렌이 재건해 1710년 완공한 런던의 상징적 대성당이다. 높이 111미터의 거대한 돔은 영국 바로크 건축의 걸작으로 300년 넘게 런던의 스카이라인을 지켜왔고, 1940년 12월 대공습의 화염 속에서 연기 위로 솟아오른 돔의 사진은 전쟁을 견디는 영국인들에게 희망의 상징이 되었다. 이 자리에는 7세기 초부터 성당이 있었으며, 종교개혁기에는 성당 마당의 야외 설교단 '폴스 크로스'가 런던의 여론이 형성되던 설교의 중심지였다—1526년에는 틴들이 번역한 신약성경이 바로 이 구역에서 불태워지기도 했으니, 영어 성경의 수난과 승리가 겹쳐진 땅이다. 시인이자 사제인 존 던은 1621년부터 세상을 떠난 1631년까지 이곳의 수석사제로 섬기며 설교했고, 옛 성당에서 살아남은 그의 조상(彫像)이 지금도 성당 안에 서 있다. 성당에는 홀만 헌트의 명화 '세상의 빛'이 걸려 있어, 등불을 들고 문 밖에서 두드리시는 그리스도를 보여 준다. 지하 묘실에는 렌 자신이 안장되어 있는데, 묘비에는 '기념비를 찾으려거든 주위를 둘러보라'는 명문이 새겨져 있다. 개신교 순례자에게 이곳은 도시의 심장부에 선 교회의 공적 사명을 생각하게 하는 자리이며, 성가대가 드리는 이븐송(저녁기도)에 참석하면 성공회 예배 전통의 아름다움을 직접 경험할 수 있다.

St Paul's Cathedral, rebuilt by Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of 1666 and completed in 1710, has crowned London's skyline with its 111-meter dome for three centuries; the famous photograph of the dome rising above the smoke of the Blitz in December 1940 made it a national symbol of hope. A cathedral has stood here since the early 7th century, and at Paul's Cross in the churchyard—London's great open-air pulpit—Reformation opinion was forged, though Tyndale's New Testaments were also burned in this precinct in 1526. The poet-priest John Donne served as dean from 1621 to 1631, and his effigy, which survived the fire, still stands inside, while Holman Hunt's painting 'The Light of the World' shows Christ knocking at the door. Wren himself lies in the crypt beneath the epitaph 'If you seek his monument, look around you.' Attending choral Evensong is a wonderful way to experience this church's living tradition of public worship at the heart of a great city.
