세인트 제임스 성공회교회 (푼타아레나스)

칠레 최남단 마젤란 해협 연안의 항구 도시 푼타아레나스에 자리한 세인트 제임스 성공회교회는 1895년, 남미선교회 소속으로 오랜 세월 티에라델푸에고의 야간족 사이에서 살며 사역했던 선교사 존 윌리엄스 목사에 의해 세워졌다. 현재의 건물은 1899년에 완공되었고 1929년 증축되었다. 이 교회는 우라이아만에서 순교자를 낸 남미선교회의 고통스러운 초기 선교 역사가 마침내 뿌리내려 맺은 열매 중 하나로, 1867년 이후 마젤란 지역으로 이주해 온 영국계 양목축 이민자 공동체의 신앙 중심지 역할을 감당했다. 그러나 1930~40년대 영국인 공동체가 쇠퇴하면서 교회도 함께 기울어, 이후 약 40년간 상주 사제 없이 근근이 명맥만 유지하는 시절을 지나야 했다. 그러다 1993년, 칠레 태생의 성공회 사제가 부임하면서 교회는 다시 활력을 되찾았고, 오늘날은 이주민의 교회에서 현지인의 교회로 완전히 자리를 옮겨 앉은 살아있는 공동체로 예배를 이어가고 있다. 외부 이민자들이 세운 신앙이 한 세기를 지나 현지인의 손으로 계승된 이 이야기는, 선교의 열매가 시간이 걸리더라도 결국 그 땅의 사람들에게 돌아간다는 사실을 보여준다. 방문한다면 소박한 목조 예배당 내부에 걸린 지난 세기 이민자들의 이름이 새겨진 명패들을 눈여겨보길 권한다.
St. James' Anglican Church, Punta Arenas — Punta Arenas
St. James' Anglican Church in Punta Arenas, Chile's southernmost port city on the Strait of Magellan, was founded in 1895 by Rev. John Williams, a missionary who had spent years living among the Yahgan people of Tierra del Fuego under the South American Missionary Society. The present building was completed in 1899 and enlarged in 1929. The church stood as one of the eventual fruits of the same mission society whose earlier work at Wulaia Bay had cost missionaries their lives, and it became the spiritual home of the British sheep-farming immigrants who settled Magallanes from 1867 onward. As the British community declined in the 1930s-40s, the church declined with it, going roughly 40 years without a resident chaplain. In 1993 a Chilean-born Anglican priest was appointed, and the congregation was revived, passing fully from an immigrant church into a Chilean one. Visitors might look for the memorial plaques bearing the names of past immigrant families inside the simple wooden sanctuary.
