세인트 자일스 대성당(에든버러)

에든버러 로열마일 한복판에 선 이 교회는 제네바에서 칼뱅에게 배우고 돌아온 존 녹스가 1559년부터 1572년 세상을 떠나기까지 담임하며 스코틀랜드 종교개혁을 이끈 현장으로, 장로교의 모교회로 불린다. 1560년 스코틀랜드 의회가 개신교 신앙을 받아들이고 녹스 등이 기초한 스코틀랜드 신앙고백을 채택하면서, 이 교회는 말씀 중심의 예배와 장로 정치가 형성되는 중심이 되었다. 1637년에는 국왕이 강요한 새 기도서에 반발해 제니 게디스라는 여인이 예배 중 의자를 던졌다는 이야기가 전해지는데, 이 사건은 국가 언약 운동의 도화선이 되었다. 그 장로교 유산은 훗날 선교사들을 통해 한국 장로교회로 이어졌으니, 한국 개신교 순례자에게는 자기 교회의 뿌리를 확인하는 자리다. 15세기의 왕관 모양 첨탑은 에든버러 스카이라인의 상징이며, 내부에는 녹스의 동상과 정교한 시슬 채플(1911)이 있다. 녹스는 교회 곁 옛 묘지에 묻혔는데, 지금은 주차장이 된 그 자리에 작은 표석만이 개혁자의 무덤을 알린다. 메리 여왕이 만 명의 군대보다 녹스의 기도를 더 두려워했다고 전해질 만큼, 이곳은 강단의 말씀과 골방의 기도가 나라를 바꾼 역사를 증언한다.

From 1559 until his death in 1572, John Knox, fresh from Calvin's Geneva, ministered at St Giles' and drove the Scottish Reformation, making it the mother church of Presbyterianism; in 1560 the Scots Parliament embraced the Protestant faith and the Scots Confession that Knox helped draft. In 1637 the church saw the famous stool-throwing protest attributed to Jenny Geddes against the imposed prayer book, a spark of the National Covenant movement, and its Presbyterian heritage later reached Korea through missionaries. Under its fifteenth-century crown spire, a landmark of the Royal Mile, find the statue of Knox and the ornate Thistle Chapel of 1911. Knox himself lies in the former kirkyard — now a parking area — marked only by a small plaque; Mary Queen of Scots is said to have feared his prayers more than an army of ten thousand men.
