성 김대건신부 제주표착기념관

2006년 제주 용수리에 개관한 이 기념관은 한국 최초의 사제 김대건 신부가 1845년 사제 서품 후 귀국하던 길에 라파엘호로 이곳 해안에 표착한 사건을 기념한다. 1821년 충남 솔뫼에서 태어난 김대건은 열다섯 살에 선발되어 마카오로 유학을 떠났고, 1845년 8월 상해 금가항성당에서 페레올 주교에게 사제 서품을 받았다. 그는 페레올 주교, 다블뤼 신부와 신자 선원들을 태운 길이 십수 미터의 작은 목선 라파엘호로 서해를 건너다 거센 풍랑을 만나 표류한 끝에 그해 9월 이곳 용수리 해안에 닿은 것으로 전해진다. 전시는 마카오 유학과 상해에서의 서품, 목숨을 건 라파엘호 항해, 그리고 입국 이듬해인 1846년 새남터에서 스물다섯의 나이로 순교하기까지 그의 짧고 뜨거운 생애와 한국 천주교 초기 역사를 다룬다. 젊은 나이에 복음을 위해 모든 것을 건 그의 여정은 교파를 넘어 '자기의 생명을 미워하는 자는 영생하도록 보전하리라'(요 12:25)는 말씀을 떠올리게 한다. 조선 후기 박해사의 전체 흐름을 정리한 전시물은 개신교 전래 이전 이 땅의 기독교 수용사를 이해하는 데도 유익하다. 기념관 옆에 실물 크기로 복원된 라파엘호에 직접 올라 그 배의 작음을 몸으로 체감해 보길 권한다.
St. Andrew Kim Taegon Jeju Landing Memorial Hall — Jeju Jeju
Opened in 2006 at Yongsu-ri, this museum commemorates the 1845 landfall of Kim Dae-geon, Korea's first Catholic priest. Born at Solmoe in 1821 and sent to Macau for study at fifteen, Kim was ordained in Shanghai in August 1845 and set out for home aboard the small wooden boat Raphael, carrying Bishop Ferréol and Fr. Daveluy; battered by storms, the vessel drifted ashore here that September. Exhibits trace his brief, ardent life—from his studies to his martyrdom at Saenamteo in 1846 at age twenty-five—alongside the early history of Christianity in Korea before the arrival of Protestant missions. Climbing aboard the full-scale reconstruction of the Raphael beside the museum, visitors grasp just how small the vessel was that carried the gospel across the Yellow Sea.
