Spanish Evangelical Church El Salvador, Madrid — Community of Madrid
The El Salvador church in Madrid is one of the living symbols of Spanish Protestantism. After the 16th-century Reformation was crushed and erased by the Inquisition, Spanish evangelicalism only sprouted again in the 19th century, amid what is called the second Reformation or evangelical revival. When the revolution of 1868 opened freedom of worship, scattered believers gathered again into community, and the roots of the Spanish Evangelical Church (IEE) took form in 1869. This church stands as evidence that, after centuries of repression, Spaniards themselves rebuilt evangelical worshiping communities, proof that the seed seemingly severed by martyrdom did not die but grew again. Rather than a grand pilgrimage landmark, it is a living site of a Protestant minority where worship is still offered. When visiting, respect service times and, if possible, contact them beforehand.
