소래교회 복원 예배당

소래교회 복원 예배당은 1883년 서상륜·서경조 형제가 황해도 장연군 솔내(소래)에 세운 한국 최초의 자생 개신교회를, 총신대학교 양지캠퍼스 교정에 옛 모습대로 복원한 기와지붕 예배당이다. 서상륜은 만주 우장(牛莊)에서 스코틀랜드 선교사 존 로스(John Ross)를 만나 병을 치료받고 신앙을 받아들인 뒤, 최초의 한글 성경 번역을 도왔고 그 쪽복음을 품고 고향으로 돌아와 신앙 공동체를 일구었다. 외국 선교사가 이 땅에 상주하기도 전에, 한국인 스스로 성경을 읽고 전하며 교회를 세운 것이다. 언더우드와 아펜젤러가 1885년 제물포에 도착하기 전에 이미 성경이 먼저 들어와 교회를 낳은 이 역사는, 한국 개신교의 가장 큰 자랑이자 '오직 성경(Sola Scriptura)'의 능력을 보여 주는 살아 있는 증거다. 이후 소래교회는 언더우드가 세례를 베풀고 캐나다 선교사 매켄지가 헌신하는 등 한국 장로교회의 못자리가 되었다. 복원된 예배당 안에 앉아 남녀 사이를 가르던 휘장과 흙바닥의 옛 예배 모습을 그려 보고, 성경 한 권이 낳은 교회의 놀라운 시작을 묵상해 보자.
Sorae Church Replica — Gyeonggi Yongin-si
This is a faithful reconstruction, on the Chongshin University Yangji campus, of Korea's first indigenous Protestant church, founded in 1883 at Sorae in Hwanghae Province by the brothers Seo Sang-ryun and Seo Gyeong-jo. Seo Sang-ryun met the Scottish missionary John Ross in Manchuria, embraced the faith after being healed of illness, helped translate the first Korean-language Scriptures, and carried the gospel portions home to plant a congregation — before any resident missionary lived on Korean soil. That the Bible arrived and gave birth to a church even before Underwood and Appenzeller landed at Jemulpo in 1885 is the great glory of Korean Protestantism and living proof of the power of Scripture alone. Sorae later became the taproot of Korean Presbyterianism, where Underwood baptized converts and the Canadian missionary McKenzie gave his life. Sit inside the restored sanctuary and picture the early worship on its earthen floor.
