신나무골성지
신나무골성지는 경상도의 초기 교우촌 가운데 하나로, 박해 시대 신자들이 세상의 눈을 피해 깊은 골짜기로 숨어들어 신앙을 지킨 피난처이자, 대구 지역 천주교회의 첫 사목이 시작된 곳이다. 을해박해(1815)와 정해박해(1827)를 피해 흩어진 신자들이 이 산골에 모여 옹기를 굽고 담배를 심으며 신앙 공동체를 이루었다. 1885년 무렵 파리외방전교회의 로베르(김보록) 신부가 이곳에 자리 잡고 본격적인 사목을 시작하면서, 오늘날 대구대교구의 뿌리가 여기서 뻗어 나갔다. 이후 신자가 늘고 여건이 갖추어지자 본당은 대구 시내로 옮겨 가, 지금의 계산성당으로 이어졌다. 깊은 골짜기의 작은 교우촌이 영남 복음화의 첫 둥지가 된 이 역사는, 겨자씨 한 알이 자라 새들이 깃드는 큰 나무가 되는 하나님 나라의 이치를 그대로 보여 준다. 개신교 순례자에게도 시작은 미약하나 끝은 창대케 하시는 하나님의 손길을 확인하게 하는 곳이다. 성지에 복원된 초가와 우물터를 돌아보며 숨어 지내던 신자들의 고단하지만 뜨거웠던 일상을 그려 보라.
Sinnamugol Holy Site — Gyeongbuk Chilgok-gun
Sinnamugol is one of the earliest Catholic villages in the Gyeongsang region — a refuge where believers fled deep into the valley to keep their faith through the persecutions, and the place where the ministry of the Daegu church began. Scattered by the persecutions of 1815 and 1827, believers gathered here to fire pottery and grow tobacco while forming a faith community. Around 1885 Fr. Robert (Kim Bo-rok) of the Paris Foreign Missions settled here and began resident ministry, and from this root grew today's Daegu archdiocese. As numbers grew, the parish moved into the city to become present-day Gyesan Cathedral. That a tiny hidden hamlet became the first nest of evangelization for the whole region illustrates the mustard seed growing into a great tree in whose branches the birds nest. It reminds pilgrims of every tradition of the God who makes small beginnings vast. The restored thatched cottages and old well evoke the hard yet fervent daily life of believers in hiding.
