목자들의 들판 교회

베들레헴 동쪽 베이트 사후르의 완만한 들판은 누가복음 2장에서 밤에 양 떼를 지키던 목자들에게 천사가 나타나 '온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식'을 처음 전한 곳으로 오래도록 전해져 왔다. 하늘의 군대가 '지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요 땅에서는 평화'라 찬송한 이 자리는, 로마 황제의 칙령과 인구조사로 온 세상이 움직이던 때에 정작 구원의 소식이 왕궁이 아니라 노숙하던 가난한 목자들에게 먼저 임했음을 증언한다. 이 들판은 구약에서 룻과 보아스가 만나고 다윗이 양을 치던 베들레헴의 목축지와 이어지는 땅이기도 하다. 가톨릭 구역에는 1953년 이탈리아 건축가 안토니오 바를루치가 유목민의 천막 모양을 본떠 설계한 기념 채플이 세워졌고, 돔 안쪽에는 목자들과 천사, 성탄의 장면이 그려져 있다. 채플 주변에는 실제로 목자들이 양 떼와 함께 머물던 것과 같은 자연 동굴 예배처들이 보존되어 있어, 4세기 이래 이곳에서 성탄을 기념해 온 흔적을 볼 수 있다. 돌로 둘러싸인 동굴은 울림이 좋아 순례팀들이 즐겨 찬송을 부르는 곳이 되었다. 낮은 자를 먼저 찾아오시는 하나님의 마음이 이 소박한 들판만큼 잘 드러나는 곳도 드물다. 동굴 채플 안에서 '그 어린 주 예수'나 '천사 찬송하기를'을 함께 불러 보며, 나 같은 자에게도 임한 큰 기쁨의 소식을 다시 새겨 보길 권한다.
Shepherds' Field Chapel — Area A
The gentle fields of Beit Sahour east of Bethlehem are the traditional place where, in Luke 2, an angel appeared to shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night and announced the good news of great joy for all people. That the message of salvation came first not to a palace but to poor shepherds sleeping in the open, while an imperial census stirred the whole world, is the heart of what this humble ground proclaims. A tent-shaped memorial chapel, designed in 1953 by the Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi to echo a nomad's tent, stands here beside natural cave chapels like the ones shepherds once used with their flocks. The stone caves have such fine acoustics that pilgrim groups love to sing carols within them. Few places show so plainly the heart of a God who seeks out the lowly first.
