세비야 대성당·히랄다

세계 최대급 고딕 성당으로, 옛 대(大)모스크 자리 위에 세워졌습니다. 1401년 시작해 1519년 무렵 완공된 이 성당은 "후대가 미쳤다고 할 만큼 큰 성당을 짓자"던 기록으로도 유명합니다. 종탑 히랄다는 알모하드 왕조가 세운 미너렛을 개조한 것이어서, 아래층의 이슬람 벽돌 장식과 위층의 그리스도교 종루가 한 탑에 층층이 겹쳐 있습니다. 이슬람과 그리스도교 문명이 한 건물에 포개진 셈입니다. 내부에는 크리스토퍼 콜럼버스의 기념묘가 네 명의 왕을 상징하는 인물이 관을 떠받든 형태로 놓여 있어, 대항해와 신대륙 정복의 역사가 이 제국 성당에 얽혀 있음을 보여줍니다. 신대륙에서 흘러든 부와, 그 이면의 정복·강제 개종의 그늘을 함께 기억할 일입니다. 방문 팁: 히랄다는 계단이 아니라 완만한 경사로로 올라 종탑 전망을 볼 수 있고, 성수기에는 대기가 길어 온라인 예매를 권합니다.
Seville Cathedral & La Giralda — Andalusia (Seville)
One of the world's largest Gothic cathedrals, raised on the site of a former great mosque. Begun in 1401 and finished around 1519, it is famed for a chronicle vowing to build a church so vast later ages would call them mad. Its bell tower, La Giralda, is a converted Almohad minaret, so Islamic brickwork below and a Christian belfry above rise layered in one tower. Inside, the monument tomb of Christopher Columbus, borne by four figures for the kingdoms of Spain, ties the age of exploration and New World conquest to this imperial church. The wealth that flowed from the Americas and the shadow of conquest and forced conversion belong together in memory. Tip: the Giralda is climbed by ramps, not stairs, and online tickets help in peak season.
