서울YMCA 회관은 1903년 창설된 황성기독교청년회(YMCA)의 본거지로, 종로 한복판에서 한국 기독교 청년운동과 민족계몽운동을 이끈 산실이다. 이상재, 윤치호, 김정식 같은 기독 지식인들은 이곳을 무대로 청년들에게 새 길을 열어 주었다. Seoul YMCA — Seoul Jongno-gu
The Seoul YMCA building was the base of the Hwangseong (Seoul) YMCA, founded in 1903, and the cradle from which Korea's Christian youth and enlightenment movements were led in the heart of Jongno. Christian leaders like Yi Sang-jae, Yun Chi-ho, and Kim Jeong-sik opened new paths for young people here. Combining Bible study and prayer with night schools, lectures, sports, and vocational training, the YMCA showed that the gospel renews not only a person's soul but their mind and whole life. It served as a base behind the 1919 March First Movement and the Tokyo declaration of February 8 that sparked it, and a place where young men robbed of their country grasped its future through prayer and debate. It is also remembered as the birthplace of basketball and baseball in Korea. This place, where the gospel went out from the sanctuary into the public square, quietly asks today's pilgrim about the social calling of faith.
