성거산성지
성거산성지는 박해를 피해 산속 깊이 숨어든 신자들이 이루었던 교우촌의 터로, 소학골과 서들골 등 산상 교우촌 유적과 병인박해 순교자들이 묻힌 줄무덤이 함께 남아 있는 곳이다. 세상을 떠나 험한 산중으로 들어간 신자들은 화전을 일구고 옹기를 구워 팔며 근근이 살아갔지만, 그 가난하고 고단한 산속 살림 가운데서도 새벽마다 함께 기도하고 교리를 나누며 신앙 공동체를 지켜냈다. 이렇게 광야와 산과 동굴을 떠돌며 믿음을 지킨 그들의 삶은, '광야와 산과 동굴과 토굴에 유리하였느니라'(히 11:38)고 기록된 히브리서 11장의 믿음의 사람들을 그대로 닮았다. 병인박해가 몰아치자 이 산속 교우촌도 무사하지 못해 많은 신자가 붙잡혀 순교했고, 그 유해가 산자락에 나란히 묻힌 것이 지금의 줄무덤이다. 이름조차 전해지지 않는 순교자들이 어깨를 나란히 하고 누운 줄무덤은, 사람의 기록에는 남지 않았으나 하늘에는 새겨진 믿음의 증인들을 기억하게 하는 조용한 설교가 된다. 성거산 능선을 따라 옛 교우촌 터와 줄무덤, 기념 시설을 잇는 순례길이 잘 조성되어 있어 걷는 순례에 더없이 어울린다. 숲길을 천천히 걸으며 이 산 어딘가에서 숨죽여 드렸을 그들의 새벽 기도를 상상해 보길 권한다.
Seonggeosan Holy Site — Chungnam Cheonan-si
Seonggeosan preserves the sites of hidden mountain villages where persecuted Catholics gathered, such as Sohak-gol and Seodeul-gol, along with the row graves of martyrs from the 1866 persecution. Fleeing the world into rugged highlands, these believers scraped by through slash-and-burn farming and pottery-making, yet even in that poor, hard mountain life they kept a worshiping community, praying together at dawn and sharing the faith. Their lives — wandering mountains and caves — mirror the believers of Hebrews 11, 'of whom the world was not worthy.' When the persecution reached even these hidden villages, many were seized and martyred, their remains laid side by side in what are now the row graves. Those unmarked graves, the anonymous lying shoulder to shoulder, are a quiet sermon on faith unrecorded by men yet inscribed in heaven. A ridgeline trail links the village sites and graves, making this an ideal walking pilgrimage.
