전주 서문교회

전주 서문교회는 1893년 미국 남장로교 테이트(Lewis B. Tate)와 레이놀즈(William D. Reynolds) 선교사의 사역으로 시작된 전북 최초의 개신교회로, 호남 장로교 선교의 출발점이다. 특히 레이놀즈는 훗날 신구약 성경 번역의 중심 인물로 활약한 선교사로, 그가 이곳에서 시무하는 동안 전주는 호남 선교의 중심 도시로 자라날 기틀을 다졌다. 이 교회가 서문 밖 시장 곁에 자리 잡았다는 사실은 의미가 깊다. 높은 담 안의 관청이나 양반가가 아니라, 온갖 사람이 오가는 저잣거리 한복판으로 복음이 들어간 것이다. 세리와 죄인의 친구가 되신 예수처럼, 이 교회는 평범한 백성 속으로 파고들었다. 그렇게 민중 곁에 심긴 한 알의 씨앗으로부터 전북의 수많은 교회가 뻗어 나갔으니, 서문교회는 큰 나무로 자란 씨앗과도 같다. 교회 종탑에 걸린 오래된 종은 전킨(William Junkin) 선교사를 기념하는 것으로 전해지니, 방문할 때 그 유래를 물어보라.
Seomun Presbyterian Church, Jeonju — Jeonbuk Wansan-gu
Seomun Church in Jeonju, begun in 1893 through the ministry of Southern Presbyterian missionaries Lewis Tate and William Reynolds, is the first Protestant church in North Jeolla and the fountainhead of Presbyterian missions in Honam. Reynolds in particular would later be a central figure in translating the Old and New Testaments, and during his ministry here Jeonju laid the foundation to grow into the mission center of Honam. That the church was planted beside the market outside the west gate carries deep meaning: the gospel entered not the walled offices of officials or noble households but the very middle of the marketplace where all kinds of people passed. Like Jesus who became friend of tax collectors and sinners, this church pressed in among ordinary folk. From that single seed planted beside the common people, countless churches spread across the province, so that Seomun is like a seed grown into a great tree. The old bell in its tower is said to memorialize missionary William Junkin; ask about its origin when you visit.
