서도중앙교회
강화 서쪽 바다의 작은 섬 주문도에 자리한 교회로, 1923년 지어진 한옥 예배당이 전통 한옥 양식과 교회 건축이 결합된 희귀한 사례로 인천시 문화재로 지정되어 있다. 1900년대 초 뭍에서 건너온 복음이 섬에 뿌리를 내렸고, 섬 주민들이 스스로 헌금하고 목재를 나르고 품을 보태어 이 예배당을 지어 올렸다. 외부의 지원이 아닌 자립 신앙으로 세워진 서해 도서 선교의 결실로, 팔작지붕 아래 회중석과 강단을 갖춘 내부는 한옥의 몸에 예배의 마음을 담은 모습이다. 뱃길이 아니면 닿을 수 없는 작은 섬에까지 복음이 건너가 공동체의 중심이 된 역사는, 땅끝을 향해 쉬지 않고 나아가는 선교의 발걸음을 실감하게 한다. 교회는 백 년 가까이 섬사람들의 예배당이자 사랑방, 아이들의 배움터로 쓰이며 주문도의 삶과 함께해 왔다. 지금도 주일이면 종소리가 갯벌과 포구 위로 퍼져 나가, 섬의 시간이 예배를 중심으로 흐르고 있음을 알려 준다. 팔작지붕 아래 예배 공간의 소박한 정취와 섬마을 풍경이 어우러진 모습이 이 교회만의 매력이다. 강화 외포리에서 배를 타고 들어가는 길 자체가 순례이니, 바닷바람 속에서 백 년 전 복음을 싣고 건너온 배를 상상해 보라.
Seodo Jungang Church — Incheon Ganghwa-gun
On the small island of Jumundo west of Ganghwa stands Seodo Jungang Church, whose 1923 hanok sanctuary — a rare marriage of traditional Korean architecture and church building — is designated Incheon cultural heritage. The gospel crossed to the island in the early 1900s, and the islanders raised the chapel with their own offerings, timber, and labor: fruit of self-supporting faith on Korea's western isles. For nearly a century it has been the island's house of worship, gathering place, and school, its Sunday bell still carrying over mudflats and harbor. That the gospel reached even this small island and became the heart of its community makes the boat journey here feel like a walk to the ends of the earth — and the ferry ride from Ganghwa is itself part of the pilgrimage.
