Santuario del Padre Hurtado (Shrine of St. Alberto Hurtado) — Santiago
This shrine holds the remains of Chile's most recently canonized saint, Alberto Hurtado. Born in Viña del Mar in 1901, he was ordained a Jesuit priest and in 1944 founded Hogar de Cristo to care for the homeless and destitute, an organization that remains Chile's largest charity, still serving homeless people, poor children, and the elderly nationwide. Hurtado died of pancreatic cancer in 1952 and was declared a saint by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. The shrine holding his remains opened in 1995, with a modest chapel and exhibits on his life, and volunteers carrying on his mission still work from the site today. In its unadorned simplicity, visitors are invited to consider a priest who believed that standing beside the poor was true faith.
