목포 산정동성당

목포 산정동성당은 1897년에 설립된 전남 최초의 천주교 본당으로, 목포 개항과 함께 시작된 호남 천주교 선교의 거점이었다. 개항장의 활기와 혼란이 뒤섞인 항구 도시에서, 이 성당은 오랜 박해 끝에 얻은 신앙의 자유를 딛고 호남 곳곳으로 복음을 실어 나르는 출발점이 되었다. 특히 이곳은 한국 천주교 평신도 운동사에서 잊을 수 없는 자리인데, 한국전쟁 직후인 1953년 이 성당에서 한국 최초의 레지오 마리애가 도입되었기 때문이다. 전쟁으로 온 나라가 폐허가 되고 마음마다 상처가 깊던 그때, 성직자만이 아니라 평범한 신자들이 스스로 기도와 봉사에 나서는 신심 운동이 이곳에서 싹터 전국으로 번져 나갔다. 회복은 언제나 화려한 곳이 아니라 상처 입은 자리에서, 이름 없는 이들의 헌신에서 시작된다는 것을 이 역사는 조용히 보여 준다. 성당 구내의 레지오 마리애 기념 공간에서 한국 평신도 운동의 첫걸음을 확인할 수 있다.
Sanjeongdong Catholic Church — Jeonnam Mokpo-si
Founded in 1897 as the first Catholic parish in South Jeolla, Sanjeongdong Church anchored the Catholic mission in the newly opened port of Mokpo. In a harbor city humming with the energy and disorder of an open port, this parish became a launching point that carried the gospel, won after long persecution, throughout Honam. It holds an unforgettable place in the history of Korean lay spirituality: in 1953, in the aftermath of the Korean War, the Legion of Mary was introduced to Korea here. In that time when the whole nation lay in ruins and hearts were deeply wounded, a movement of ordinary believers taking up prayer and service themselves sprang up here and spread nationwide. This history quietly shows that renewal begins not in grand places but in wounded ones, in the devotion of the unnamed. A memorial on the grounds marks this first step of the Korean lay movement.
