상동교회

1888년 미국 감리회 의료선교사 윌리엄 스크랜턴이 남대문 인근에 설립한 감리교회로, 진료소와 예배당을 겸하며 가난한 민중 곁에서 시작되었다. 스크랜턴은 궁궐이 아니라 성문 밖 민중의 삶터를 선교지로 택한 사람으로, 버려진 병자들을 거두어 치료하며 '민중의 선교사'로 불렸다. 숯장수 출신으로 회심하여 목사가 된 전덕기가 이 교회를 이끌면서 상동교회는 구국운동의 심장부가 되었으니, 상동청년회와 상동청년학원이 여기서 민족의 인재를 길렀고 비밀결사 신민회의 주요 인사들이 이 예배당을 드나들었다. 1907년 헤이그 특사 파견 논의가 이곳에서 이루어졌고, 이준 열사는 떠나기 전 이 교회에서 기도하고 길을 나선 것으로 전해진다. 주시경의 한글 연구와 청년 교육 운동도 이 교회를 무대로 펼쳐져, 복음이 민족의 말과 정신을 깨우는 데까지 나아갔다. 복음이 개인의 구원에 머물지 않고 민족의 고난을 함께 짊어지는 십자가의 길로 이어진 대표적 현장이다. 오늘날 남대문시장 한복판의 현대식 건물 안에 예배당이 자리한 모습 자체가, 처음부터 시장 사람들과 함께해 온 이 교회의 정체성을 말없이 보여준다. 시장의 소란 속에서 예배당으로 올라가는 걸음에, 민중 곁에 계신 그리스도를 묵상해 보자.
Sangdong Church — Seoul Jung-gu
Sangdong Church was founded in 1888 by Methodist medical missionary William Scranton, beginning as a clinic-and-chapel among the poor near Namdaemun — Scranton chose the city's neglected sick as his parish. Under Jeon Deok-gi, a former charcoal peddler turned pastor, it became the heart of the independence movement, hosting the Sangdong Youth Association, a night school for national leaders, and the secret Sinminhoe society; the Hague emissary mission of 1907 was discussed here, and Yi Jun is said to have prayed in this church before departing. The pioneering Korean linguist Ju Si-gyeong also taught here, the gospel awakening both faith and national spirit. Its sanctuary today, set inside a modern building in the middle of Namdaemun Market, still speaks of a church that has always stood with ordinary people.
