Sanctuary of the Virxe da Barca — Galicia (A Coruña)
At the very end of Muxía's Atlantic rocks, where the waves break in white spray, the Sanctuary of the Virxe da Barca (Virgin of the Boat) stands alone; the present building dates from the 17th-18th centuries. A very old local legend clings to it: that the Virgin Mary came to this shore in a boat of stone to encourage the apostle James, weary from preaching at the land's end, and that the boat hardened into the shoreline rocks seen today — a large sail-shaped stone and a rudder-shaped one. But honestly, this is a tradition in which later Christian devotion was layered over an ancient Celtic reverence for stones, not historical fact. The folk custom of passing nine times beneath the rocking stone for healing likewise comes from this legend, not from Scripture. More than any theology, the true resonance here comes from human smallness before the Atlantic's fierce waves and wind, and from awe of the Creator who made that vast world. A Protestant pilgrim turns not to the rocks but to the One who made the sea and the wind. Tip: do not climb the slick rocks on high-surf days; take in the sunset from a safe spot.
