San Juan de Ortega — Burgos
The 12th-century Romanesque monastery of San Juan de Ortega was built by the saint John, a disciple of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. To protect pilgrims crossing the wild Oca mountains, he built bridges, roads, and hospices, and his tomb rests here. The famous 'miracle of light' occurs near the spring and autumn equinoxes, when a shaft of evening light falls precisely on a carved capital of the Annunciation. This is not a supernatural marvel but the deliberate astronomical alignment of a 12th-century mason (fact), weaving light, architecture, and theology into one.
