삼성산성지

1839년 기해박해 때 새남터에서 순교한 파리외방전교회의 앵베르 주교와 모방·샤스탕 신부의 유해가 신자들에 의해 비밀리에 안장되었던 곳으로, 관악구 삼성산 자락에 성지가 조성되어 있다. 조선 최초의 서양인 주교였던 앵베르와, 조선에 처음 들어온 서양인 선교사 모방, 그리고 샤스탕 신부는 박해가 거세지자 자신들 때문에 신자들이 더 큰 화를 입을 것을 염려하여 스스로 관헌에 나아갔고, 한강변 새남터에서 군문효수형으로 순교하였다. 목자가 양들을 위하여 목숨을 버린다는 요한복음의 말씀을 그대로 살아낸 죽음이었다. 시신을 거두는 것만으로도 목숨이 위태롭던 시절, 신자들은 감시를 피해 유해를 수습하고 이곳 삼성산 자락에 몰래 안장하였으니 그 용기 또한 깊은 울림을 준다. 세 선교사의 유해는 훗날 발굴되어 명동성당으로 옮겨졌고, 세 사람은 1984년 한국 순교 성인 103위에 포함되어 시성되었다. 지금 성지에는 세 성인의 기념비와 경당, 십자가의 길이 조성되어 있어 등산로를 따라 오르는 순례자들을 맞는다. 산길을 걸어 올라 기념비 앞에 서면, 조선 땅의 양들을 위해 목숨을 내놓은 목자들과 그들을 장사한 이름 없는 신자들의 믿음이 함께 마음에 새겨진다.
Samseongsan Holy Site — Seoul Gwanak-gu
On the slopes of Samseongsan in Gwanak-gu lies the site where believers secretly buried Bishop Laurent Imbert and Fathers Pierre Maubant and Jacques Chastan, martyred at Saenamteo in the persecution of 1839. As the persecution intensified, the three French missionaries gave themselves up to the authorities to spare their flock further suffering — shepherds laying down their lives for the sheep — and were executed by the Han River. At a time when merely recovering a body could cost one's life, believers retrieved and hid their remains on this mountainside; the relics were later moved to Myeongdong Cathedral, and the three were canonized among the 103 Korean martyr saints in 1984. A memorial, chapel, and stations of the cross now welcome pilgrims who climb the quiet mountain path.
