Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port — French Basque Country
A fortified Basque town that has been the traditional starting point of the Camino Francés for centuries. Here pilgrims collect their credencial and prepare to cross the Pyrenees into Spain on the hardest opening stage of all. Walking down the cobbled Rue de la Citadelle you reach the Porte Notre-Dame over the River Nive, linked to the church of Our Lady at the End of the Bridge. From here it is roughly 780 km to Santiago, usually more than a month on foot. That long walk becomes a metaphor for the whole life of faith. For a Protestant pilgrim the Camino is not about venerating the apostle's relics but about embodying the life described in Hebrews 11:13-16, walking as a stranger and sojourner toward a homeland. The hostels and free meals along the road grew from the ancient Christian charity of welcoming the stranger. Tip: register early in summer, and always check the weather before taking the Napoleon route.
